| English for communication (EC)
The EC program helps students communicate in both written and oral English. To do this, ICC believes that students should have a good foundation in the structure of the language and also gain knowledge of American culture.
After placement testing, students enter one of eight levels (Beginning 1, 2, 3; Intermediate 1, 2, 3; Advanced 1, 2). Most students spend an average of two terms in one level.
EC classes are offered full-time (4hrs daily Monday to Friday) and part-time (4hrs Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 2hrs Tuesday, Thursday). High Intermediate to Advanced classes are in the morning; Beginning to Intermediate classes are in the afternoon.
The regular curriculum at the Intermediate to Advanced level is divided into two sessions daily: Listening & Speaking, then Reading & Writing. Full-time students have a choice of a variety of electives during the second session on Tuesdays and Thursdays after the part-time students leave.
ELECTIVES
ICC offers full-time students a choice of interesting and relevant electives integrated into our intensive (20 hours/week) English for Communication program. These electives are a value-added part of the curriculum for full-time students in our Intermediate to Advanced levels of English for Communication.
Electives include: Exploring Film, Hawaiiana, Current Events, Life Skills, and Pop Culture. In these electives, students will have the opportunity to explore an area of interest to them while improving their verbal and written skills.
